Goats take over empty streets of Llandudno during lockdown

A herd of wild goats has been seen by local residents running through the streets of Llandudno.

The mountain goats, which normally spend their time on the Great Orme, have been trotting out in front of cars, running through the streets at night and nibbling flowers in people's gardens.

The herd of Kashmiri goats were a gift to Lord Mostyn from Queen Victoria and spend their time living on the heights of the Great Orme.

It is thought that they have come down into the town while they wait for the spring growth of grass, and have been wandering the streets because they have been so quiet during the coronavirus lockdown.

Andrew Stuart, who has lived in Llandudno for almost 22 years, said: "You don’t normally see the goats this far down - they can come down and get to the bottom of the Great Orme and do so regularly - but I think people and cars usually stop them going much further.

"They appear to have come down because it’s windy - and because there’s no one else around, they take their chance and go further and further into the town.

"They still seem to be wary of people, so it must be the lack of people due to the lockdown that’s got them."

Conwy Council said there was nothing they could do to stop goats wandering into the town.

A spokesman said: “Goats going into town is nothing unusual, particularly at this time of year, there is no way of stopping them. "

Lilah Mason, who lives in the town, said: "I think most people living in the town appreciate them and take great pleasure seeing them in the town.

"A few lost flowers in the spring is a fair price to pay to be able to see them closely.

"I know they can make a mess but the council are pretty good at cleaning the streets."
